How to breastfeed discreetly

Most people would be surprised to learn that they probably witness somebody breastfeeding in public on a daily basis. The fact is, once you get the hang of attaching your baby to your breast properly, you can begin a feed so swiftly and easily that you can breastfeed in public without people even realising that is what you are doing! Most passers-by would mistake your feeding for a cuddle with your child.

Mastering the art of discretion is easy, all you need is a little practice and good clothing. If you can wear something that keeps you covered and just exposes the breast, such as layering two tops, (so that you can lift the top one up and pull the bottom one down) you can easily hold your baby in place with one hand while unhooking your nursing bra with the other and he will be attached and feeding within seconds with his head positioned in front of your breast to shield you from public view.

You can of course turn away from the crowd as well, or sit in a quieter area if possible where fewer people will pass by. You can also cover both yourself and your baby with a blanket, poncho or sling if this makes you feel more comfortable.

Experiment with different breastfeeding positions too, as some may be easier for you to achieve discreetly than others – a popular choice for discreet feeding is the cradle hold or the rugby ball, as you have one arm free to position clothing that may move, or hold a blanket in place.
