Q. My baby is breastfeeding well but will not drink from a bottle, why is this?

Myths

ALL of the statements below are NOT TRUE - they are common myths that often put parents off breastfeeding:

  1. Some women do not produce enough breast milk to feed their baby 
  2. Breastfeeding hurts
  3. A breastfeeding baby needs extra water in hot weather
  4. Mums should wash their nipples before breastfeeding
  5. Expressing breast milk will give a good idea of how much milk a mum has
  6. Breast milk does not contain enough iron
  7. It is easier to bottle feed than breastfeed
  8. Breastfeeding ties women down
  9. Formulas contain the same nutrients as breast milk
  10. Women should stop breastfeeding if they have an infection
  11. Women should stop breastfeeding if their baby has sickness or diarrhoea
  12. Women should stop breastfeeding if taking medication
  13. Women who breastfeed must eat a restricted diet
  14. Women who breastfeed should eat and drink more in order to produce enough milk
  15. Women who smoke should not breastfeed
  16. Women who have had breast augmentation surgery should not breastfeed 
  17. Women who have had breast reduction surgery should not breastfeed
  18. Premature babies should not be breastfed
  19. Babies with a cleft lip should not breastfeed
  20. Women with small breasts produce less milk than women with large breasts
  21. Women who breastfeed cannot take the contraceptive pill
  22. Babies need other types of milk after six months
  23. Women who have had X-rays should not breastfeed
  24. Breast milk can dry up
  25. A baby shouldn’t be fed both breast milk and formula
  26. There is no such thing as nipple confusion 
  27. Women with flat or inverted nipples cannot breastfeed
  28. A woman who becomes pregnant must stop breastfeeding
  29. Breastfeeding twins is too difficult to manage
  30. Women whose breasts do not grow during pregnancy will not produce enough milk
  31. Women should not breastfeed a baby older than 12 months
  32. If a woman takes a break from breastfeeding, the milk will turn sour
  33. Women should not breastfeed after exercise
  34. Women should not get a perm or dye her hair whilst breastfeeding
  35. Breastfeeding makes breasts saggy
