iBreastfeed - Get over it!

 

Myths

ALL of the statements below are NOT TRUE - they are common myths that often put women off breastfeeding:

  1. Some women do not produce enough breast milk to feed their baby 
  2. Breastfeeding hurts
  3. Mums should wash their nipples before breastfeeding
  4. Breast milk does not contain enough iron
  5. It is easier to bottle feed than breastfeed
  6. Breastfeeding ties women down
  7. Formulas contain the same nutrients as breast milk
  8. Women who breastfeed must eat a restricted diet
  9. Women who breastfeed should eat and drink more in order to produce enough milk
  10. Women who smoke should not breastfeed
  11. Women who have had breast augmentation surgery should not breastfeed 
  12. Women who have had breast reduction surgery should not breastfeed
  13. Women with small breasts produce less milk than women with large breasts
  14. Women who breastfeed cannot take the contraceptive pill
  15. Babies need other types of milk after six months
  16. Women who have had X-rays should not breastfeed
  17. Breast milk can dry up
  18. A baby shouldn’t be fed both breast milk and formula
  19. There is no such thing as nipple confusion 
  20. A woman who becomes pregnant must stop breastfeeding
  21. Breastfeeding twins is too difficult to manage
  22. Women whose breasts do not grow during pregnancy will not produce enough milk
  23. Women should not breastfeed a baby older than 12 months
  24. If a woman takes a break from breastfeeding, the milk will turn sour
  25. Women should not get a perm or dye her hair whilst breastfeeding
  26. Breastfeeding makes your breasts saggy
